Assan Barrage Bird Sanctuary
Asan Barrage Bird Sanctuary is a magnificent birdwatcher's paradise situated near the confluence of the Asan River and the Eastern Yamuna Canal on the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border. Popularly known as Dhalipur Lake, this sanctuary spans an area of around 4 square kilometers and has been recognized as Uttarakhand's first Ramsar site.
Established in 1967, the barrage and its wetland-like ecosystem are home to a rich diversity of bird life, especially during the migratory season. Bird enthusiasts flock here to witness the spectacular arrival of migratory birds from the Pale Arctic region, including shovellers, ruddy shelducks, mallards, coots, cormorants, egrets, and wagtails.
The sanctuary also hosts rare birds of prey like Pallas's fishing eagle, marsh harrier, greater spotted eagle, osprey, and steppe eagle.
