Bhaskargad/Basgad
Bhaskargad Fort, also known as Basgad Fort, is a hill fort located in the Trimbak hill range of Nashik district, Maharashtra, about 48 kilometers from Igatpuri. The fort stands at around 3,340 feet above sea level and covers approximately 32 acres.
Built originally during the Yadava dynasty in the 13th century (1279 to 1308), it later came under the control of several rulers, including the Bahamani Sultanate, Nizamshahi, Mughals, and Marathas. Notably, it was captured by Moropant Pingale, a general of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in 1670. The fort was also controlled briefly by the Koli tribe before coming under British rule in 1818. Architecturally, the fort features a single main gate carved from the rock, rock-cut steps, several water cisterns, and ruins of structures indicating it once housed a significant population.
A crude idol of Veer Maruti and remains of temples and fortifications are still visible. Though now in ruins and less visited compared to nearby forts like Harihar, Bhaskargad is a favored spot for trekking and hiking, offering views of nearby hills and forts in the Trimbak range. Visitors need to carry water as there are no drinking water facilities on the fort itself. The fort was historically important for guarding the ancient trade route via Gonda pass connecting the west coast to Nashik.
