Burzahom Archaeological Site
The Burzahom Archaeological Site is a prehistoric settlement located in the village of Burzahom, in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the northernmost Neolithic sites in India, dating back to between 3000 BCE and 1000 BCE.
The site has revealed four distinct cultural phases, showcasing the transition from subterranean and ground-level housing to mudbrick structures.
Excavations at Burzahom have uncovered a wealth of artifacts, including tools made of bone and stone, pottery, and evidence of early agricultural practices. The site also features unique burial practices and animal burials, which are not commonly found at other Neolithic sites in India.
The findings suggest that the inhabitants had contact with Central Asia, South West Asia, and the Gangetic plains.
