According to local lore, Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, sought refuge in this area during their 14-year exile, which is why the fort is named after him. Originally built by Hindu rulers, the fort later came under the control of the Portuguese in the 18th century after the Raja of Soonda surrendered it to them.
