It serves as a corridor between the Chandra Valley in Lahaul and the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The pass is named after the nearby Hamta Village, situated below Sethan Village.
The pass is renowned for its dramatic crossover trek, offering trekkers a unique experience as they traverse from the lush green Kullu Valley to the stark, arid landscape of Lahaul. The trek typically starts from Manali, passes through Jobra, and continues to Chika, Balu Ka Gera, and Chatru before reaching the pass.
The journey includes traversing through vertical rock walls, waterfalls, hanging glaciers, pinewoods, rhododendron forests, open meadows, and small lakes.
