Harihar Fort, also known as Harshagad, is an ancient hill fort located about 40km from Nashik in Maharashtra. Built during the Yadava dynasty around the 13th century, its primary purpose was to oversee the important trade route passing through Gonda Ghat.
What sets this fort apart is its dramatic architecture—the structure sits atop a triangular rock with nearly vertical edges, and the route to the summit features a famous stone staircase carved at a steep 80-degree angle directly into the rock. These steps, about 117 in total, are narrow and almost vertical, offering both a thrilling and challenging trek that has become iconic on social media.
Though only a few ancient remains like water cisterns and a small temple of Hanuman and Shiva survive, the fort rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Sahyadri hills and nearby forts.
