Jhulta Minara Sidi Bashir Mosque
Jhulta Minara, also known as the Shaking Minarets, is an architectural marvel located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is part of the Sidi Bashir Mosque, built in 1452 CE, and is famous for its mysterious vibrating minarets.
When one minaret is gently shaken, the other minaret begins to vibrate, while the connecting passage remains unaffected—a phenomenon that has puzzled engineers for centuries. The mosque was originally constructed by Sidi Bashir, a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah, or possibly by Malik Sarang, a noble in the court of Mahmud Begada.
The structure was partially destroyed in 1753 during a war between the Marathas and Mughal governor Jawān Mard Khān, leaving only the two minarets and the central gateway.
The minarets are three stories tall, adorned with intricate carvings and balconies. The British once dismantled a similar set of minarets near Kalupur Railway Station to study the vibrations but were unable to reconstruct them.
