Kala Raksha
Kala Raksha is a non-profit trust based in Sumrasar Sheikh village, about 25 kilometers north of Bhuj, in Kutch, Gujarat. Established in 1993, it is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional arts, particularly Kutchi embroidery, patchwork, and appliqué.
The trust works with around 1,000 artisans from six communities across 26 villages, ensuring that traditional craftsmanship is sustained while artisans receive fair wages and recognition for their work. The trust operates a small museum and shop, showcasing exquisite handcrafted textiles and offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the rich artistic heritage of Kutch.
In 2005, Kala Raksha expanded its efforts by founding Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya, the first institution dedicated to design education for traditional artisans, helping them innovate while preserving their cultural identity.
