The Labrang Monastery, also known as Palden Phuntshog Phodrang, is a significant Buddhist monastery located in North Sikkim, Sikkim, India. It was founded by Gyaltsey Rigzin Champo in 1826 CE and completed in 1843 CE.
The monastery is part of the Nyingmapa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and is situated at an altitude of 7,000 feet on a hilltop surrounded by lush green jungle.
The monastery is known for its unique architecture, which has retained its original wooden structure reinforced with steel. It houses a museum with a large collection of Buddha statues, sutras, and murals. The monastery also features a gilded stupa, 18 halls, a sutra debate area, and about 60,000 sutras.
One of the highlights of visiting the monastery is witnessing the Chaam Dance during the early December festival. The monastery is located about 2 kilometers from the Phodong Monastery, making it a great spot to explore the region's rich Buddhist heritage.
