Lomas Rishi Cave
The Lomas Rishi Cave is one of the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, located in the Barabar Hills of Jehanabad district, Bihar. Carved during the Mauryan Empire (322-185 BCE), it was originally a sanctuary for the Ajivika sect, an ancient religious group that competed with Jainism and Buddhism.
The cave is known for its arch-like facade, which is the earliest example of the ogee-shaped "chaitya arch" or chandrashala, a significant feature in Indian rock-cut architecture.
The cave consists of two chambers: a large rectangular hall and a smaller semi-hemispherical room with finely polished internal surfaces.
