Padmadurg
Padmadurg, also known as Kasa Fort, is a historic sea fort built in 1676 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj near Murud in Raigad district, Maharashtra. Constructed on a rocky island in the Arabian Sea about 4 km from the famous Janjira Fort, it was strategically built to control naval activities and challenge the dominance of the Siddis who ruled Janjira.
The fort spans roughly 9 acres and features six bastions, a lotus petal-shaped design, and several structures including water tanks, cannon placements, and temple ruins. Padmadurg served as a major shipbuilding yard and defense point during Shivaji’s reign and later witnessed many battles between the Marathas and Siddis. It is now a protected site managed by the Navy and requires special permission for visits.
The fort offers panoramic views of the sea, nearby forts, and the coast of Murud, making it a significant symbol of Maharashtra’s maritime heritage.
