Ropar Wetland
The Ropar Wetland, also known as Ropar Lake, is a man-made freshwater wetland located in the Shivalik foothills of the Lower Himalayas in Rupnagar, Punjab. Created in 1952 by building a head regulator on the Sutlej River, the wetland serves multiple purposes, including irrigation, drinking water supply, and industrial water supply.
The wetland is biologically diverse, hosting at least 9 mammal species, 154 bird species (both migratory and local), 35 fish species, 9 arthropod species, 11 rotifer species, 9 crustacean species, and 10 protozoan species.
It is home to the endangered turtle Chitra indica and the threatened snake Python molurus. Due to its rich biodiversity, the Ropar Wetland has been designated as a Ramsar site, which means it is recognized for its international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
