Sakya Tangyud Monastery
Sakya Tangyud Monastery, also known as Tangyud Gompa, is a remarkable Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the village of Komic, near Hikkim in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of 4,520 meters (14,830 feet), it is one of the highest altitude monasteries in India.
The monastery is built like a fortified castle on the edge of a deep canyon, with massive slanted mud walls adorned with vertical red ochre and white stripes, giving it a unique and imposing appearance.
The monastery belongs to the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is one of only two Sakya monasteries left in Spiti. It was likely built in the early 14th century when the Sakya sect rose to power under Mongol patronage. The monastery houses a collection of ancient scriptures, thankas, and murals, and serves as a center for religious education and practice.
