Saptaparni Cave
The Saptaparni Cave, also known as Sapta Parni Guha, is a significant Buddhist site located about 2 kilometers southwest of Rajgir, Bihar. The name "Saptaparni" translates to "Seven-leaves-cave," referring to its natural shape and structure. This cave is historically important because it is believed to be the place where Buddha spent some time before his death and where the first Buddhist council was held after Buddha's parinirvana.
During this council, a group of monks, led by Ananda (Buddha's cousin) and Upali, decided to compile Buddha's teachings and create an oral tradition, which was later written down as the Pali Canon.
The cave is embedded in the Vaibhavgiri Hill and is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists and tourists alike.
