Teen Darwaza
Teen Darwaza, also known as the Three Gates, is a historical gateway located on the east side of Bhadra Fort in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, it is one of the oldest and most iconic structures in the city.
The gateway features three arches, with the central arch being the tallest at 25 feet, and the side arches at 13 feet. The central arch is 17 feet wide. The gateway is known for its intricate Indo-Islamic architecture, including beautifully carved pillars and decorative motifs.
It was historically used as an entrance to the fort and the royal palace, and it played a significant role in the city's defense and administration. One of the most fascinating legends associated with Teen Darwaza is the story of the watchman Khawaja Siddique Kotwal, who sacrificed himself to keep the Goddess Lakshmi in the city.
A lamp has been continuously lit in one of the cavities of the gateway for over 600 years by a Muslim family in dedication to this legend.
