The Tomb of Iltutmish, located in Mehrauli, South Delhi, is a significant historical monument within the Qutub Minar Complex. Built in 1235 AD by Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish, the third ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, it is considered the first surviving tomb of a Muslim ruler in India. The tomb is constructed primarily of red sandstone, with intricate calligraphy, geometric patterns, and Quranic inscriptions adorning its walls.
The interior features three mihrabs (prayer niches), with the central one being higher and richly decorated with marble. The original dome collapsed long ago and was later repaired by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, though it eventually fell again.
The tomb’s architectural style blends Persian and Indian influences, making it a remarkable example of early Indo-Islamic architecture.
