Ummed Sagar Bandh
Ummed Sagar Bandh is a dam located near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, built during the reign of Maharaja Ummed Singh in 1933 to address water scarcity and provide employment during a severe drought. The dam is situated close to Kaylana Lake and supplies water to Jodhpur and nearby areas like Shahpura.
Historically significant for its role in water conservation in the arid Marwar region, the dam was constructed alongside a canal system to channel water. Over time, however, rampant encroachment, illegal mining, and lack of maintenance have severely affected the dam and its catchment area, diminishing its capacity and threatening the water supply for around 500,000 people.
Efforts have been made to preserve the dam, but ongoing encroachments and political challenges continue to threaten its future. Despite these issues, Ummed Sagar remains an important water body and historic example of early 20th-century water management in Rajasthan.
