Jaipur May Lose UNESCO World Heritage Status Over Illegal Constructions and Poor Governance

In a significant development, UNESCO has warned that Jaipur could lose its prestigious World Heritage status due to increasing threats to its historic character. The Pink City, which earned the designation in 2019, is now facing serious conservation challenges that could jeopardize its global recognition.

According to UNESCO, the primary concerns include illegal constructions, encroachments, and infrastructure projects undertaken without proper heritage impact assessments. These activities, experts say, are altering the architectural integrity and cultural value of Jaipur’s historic urban landscape.

Authorities have also been criticized for poor governance and weak enforcement of conservation laws. Several traditional havelis and heritage buildings have reportedly fallen into disrepair, while others are being demolished to make way for modern developments. 

Urban pressure, pollution, traffic congestion, and sanitation issues have further worsened the condition of the heritage city. Conservationists warn that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, Jaipur’s cultural identity may suffer irreversible damage.

UNESCO has asked the Indian government to submit a detailed corrective action report by December 2026. Failure to address the concerns may lead to Jaipur being placed on the “World Heritage in Danger” list - a move that could impact tourism and international reputation.

Officials are expected to hold discussions soon to formulate a comprehensive conservation strategy. Tourism stakeholders and heritage activists have urged authorities to act swiftly to preserve Jaipur’s historic charm and global status.
