WFH, No Foreign Travel: PM Modi's 7 Appeals Trigger COVID-Era Memories Amid US-Iran War

India is once again hearing appeals for restraint, self-reliance, and reduced consumption this time not because of a pandemic, but due to a rapidly escalating geopolitical crisis in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to adopt a more cautious lifestyle as the ongoing US-Iran conflict threatens global oil supplies, pushes crude prices sharply higher, and raises concerns about inflation in India.

Speaking in Secunderabad after inaugurating projects worth nearly ₹9,400 crore in Telangana, the Prime Minister made seven major appeals to the public that immediately reminded many Indians of the restrictions and behavioural changes seen during the COVID-19 lockdown years.

The latest tensions began after the United States and Israel reportedly carried out coordinated airstrikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, leading to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The conflict has since intensified across the Middle East.

One of the biggest global concerns emerged when Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes through which nearly 20% of global oil supplies pass.

The situation worsened after US President Donald Trump reportedly rejected Iran’s peace proposals on Sunday, causing global crude oil prices to surge beyond $105 per barrel.

For India, which is the world’s third-largest importer of crude oil, the impact could be significant.

PM Modi’s 7 Appeals to Indians

During his speech, PM Modi asked citizens to voluntarily adopt measures aimed at reducing imports, saving fuel, and strengthening the domestic economy.

The seven key appeals were:

  1. Prioritise work from home wherever possible
  2. Avoid buying gold for one year
  3. Reduce petrol and diesel usage and use public transport or metro services
  4. Cut down cooking oil consumption
  5. Reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and shift toward natural farming
  6. Use fewer foreign-branded products and support Swadeshi goods
  7. Avoid foreign travel for one year

The Prime Minister emphasised that these measures are necessary to make India “stronger and more self-reliant” during a period of global uncertainty.

India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements. Any disruption in global oil supplies immediately affects fuel prices, transportation costs, manufacturing expenses, and ultimately household inflation.

If crude oil remains above $100 per barrel for an extended period, India could face higher petrol/diesel prices, increased transportation costs, rising food inflation, pressure on the Indian rupee, higher import bills and slower economic growth.

By encouraging reduced fuel consumption and limiting foreign spending, the government aims to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves and maintain economic stability.

Why Gold Purchases Are Being Discouraged

India is one of the world’s largest consumers of gold and imports billions of dollars worth of the precious metal every year.

According to economic data estimates, India imports nearly $72 billion worth of gold annually. Reducing gold purchases could help conserve foreign currency reserves at a time when oil import costs are rapidly increasing.

Economists believe that lowering non-essential imports such as gold can help India better manage its trade deficit during periods of global crisis.

For many Indians, the Prime Minister’s appeals felt strikingly similar to the COVID-19 years, when citizens were encouraged to stay home, reduce travel, support local businesses, and conserve resources.

The emphasis on:

  • Work from home
  • Avoiding unnecessary travel
  • Supporting local products
  • Limiting consumption

has revived memories of pandemic-era messaging focused on self-reliance and economic resilience. However, unlike the pandemic lockdowns, the current appeals are not legal restrictions but voluntary measures intended to protect India’s economy from external shocks caused by global conflict.

The renewed emphasis on Swadeshi or promoting indigenous products signals another push toward economic nationalism and domestic manufacturing.

Over the past few years, the government has already promoted initiatives such as make in India, atmanirbhar Bharat and production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. The current geopolitical tensions may further accelerate efforts to reduce dependence on foreign goods and imports.

What Happens Next?

Much now depends on how long the US-Iran conflict continues and whether oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz can be restored.

If tensions escalate further:

  • Global fuel prices could rise even more
  • Inflationary pressure may increase worldwide
  • International travel could become more expensive
  • Supply chains may face additional disruptions

For India, conserving fuel, reducing unnecessary imports, and supporting local production are being presented as precautionary steps to weather a potentially prolonged global crisis.

Conclusion

PM Modi’s seven appeals reflect growing concerns about the economic fallout of the escalating Middle East conflict. While the measures are advisory rather than mandatory, they highlight how deeply interconnected global geopolitics and everyday life have become.

As oil prices rise and uncertainty spreads across international markets, India appears to be preparing early encouraging citizens to conserve resources, spend cautiously, and strengthen domestic resilience in the face of a turbulent global environment.
