The Adi Chitteswari Durga Temple is a historic temple located in Cossipore, North Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the oldest Durga temples in Kolkata, established in the 16th century by a dacoit named Chitey Dakat.
According to legend, Chitey Dakat had a divine dream in which he was instructed to create a deity of Goddess Durga from a log of neem wood that would drift over the River Ganga. Following the dream, he found the log and had it sculpted into the idol of Goddess Chitteswari Durga.
The temple is known for its vibrant yellow and red exterior and its rich cultural heritage. The main deity, Goddess Chitteswari Durga, is depicted with ten arms, symbolizing her fierce form as Chandi riding a lion and slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
