Avalanche Peak, also known as Avalanche I, is a prominent peak in the Garhwal Himalayas, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It stands at an elevation of 6,196 meters (20,328 feet) and is situated above the Arwa Valley to the northwest of Badrinath.
The peak was first climbed in 1931 by Eric Shipton and Frank Smythe, who navigated the south ridge to reach the summit. The peak is known for its challenging climbing routes, which involve rock, snow, and ice. The area is prone to avalanches, which is how the peak got its name.
The neighboring Avalanche Peak II is slightly higher, standing at 6,443 meters (21,138 feet), and was first ascended in 1952 by a team led by E. Petzold.
