Bandel Church
The Bandel Church, formally known as the Basilica of the Holy Rosary, is one of the oldest Christian churches in West Bengal. It is situated in the town of Bandel in the Hooghly district and serves as a memorial of the Portuguese settlement in Bengal. The church is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Our Lady of the Rosary (Mother Mary, mother of Jesus Christ).
The church was originally built in 1599 by Portuguese settlers and has a rich history. It was destroyed during an attack by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan's forces in 1632, but was later rebuilt in 1660. The church features beautiful architecture, including a grand tower clock, glass windows, and a huge chandelier. A ship's mast stands in front of the church, which was presented by the captain of a Portuguese vessel that had encountered a storm in the Bay of Bengal.
