The Banganga Tank is a sacred temple tank located in the Malabar Hill area of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Built in 1127 by Lakshman Prabhu, a minister in the court of the Silhara kings, the tank is part of the Hindu Walkeshwar Temple complex.
According to legend, the tank was created when Lord Rama shot an arrow into the ground to bring forth water for his brother Lakshmana, hence the name "Banganga," meaning "Ganga created by a baan (arrow)".
The tank is spring-fed, and its water remains sweet despite being located close to the sea. The area around the tank has developed into a pilgrimage site, with several temples and dharamshalas (religious rest houses) built over time.
The Gaud Saraswat Brahmin Temple Trust still owns and manages the tank and temple, and the area is protected as a heritage site.
