Beejamandal Temple Ruins
Beejamandal Temple, located in Jatkara village near Khajuraho in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, is a fascinating archaeological site that has yet to be fully excavated. The temple, also known as Vijaya Temple, is believed to have been constructed in the 8th century and later reconstructed during the Paramara period in the 11th century by Emperor Naravarman.
It is said to be longer than the famous Kandariya Mahadev Temple of Khajuraho, measuring approximately 34.60 meters. Historical accounts suggest that the temple was never completed, as evidenced by the unfinished architectural elements found around its base.
During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the temple was demolished, and a mosque named Alamgir Mosque was built over its remains. In 1991, heavy rains led to the collapse of a wall of the mosque, revealing Hindu idols that had been hidden for centuries.
Excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India uncovered figures of Goddess Mahishasur Mardini and Lord Ganesha, further confirming the site's Hindu origins.
