Belha Devi

Belha Devi Temple, located in Pratapgarh (Belha), Uttar Pradesh, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Belha, a local incarnation of the Devi (Mother Goddess). The temple is situated on the banks of the Sai River and is a significant center for Shakti worship in northern India. The name of the city, Bela (now called Bela Pratapgarh or Pratapgarh), is derived from Maa Belha Devi.

The present temple, constructed during the period of 1811-15 by Raja Pratap Bhahadur Singh of Awadh, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The temple has been a symbol of Hindu culture and faith for centuries, attracting thousands of devotees who come to pray and seek blessings. The shrine is especially popular during the Navratri festival, when it sees a large influx of pilgrims.

Belha Devi is worshiped in the form of pindi (stone pebbles) within the sanctum sanatorium, and over time, a marble bust of the deity has been added to give it a more human-like form. The temple is maintained by the descendants of the original pujaris appointed by the raja of Pratapgarh, ensuring that the traditions and rituals are preserved.
