Bharhut Stupa
The Bharhut Stupa is an ancient Buddhist monument located in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed to have been originally built during the Maurya period, around the 3rd century BCE, and later enhanced during the Shunga period, around the 2nd century BCE.
The stupa is famous for its intricate stone railings, gateways (toranas), and numerous sculptures that depict various Buddhist themes. One of the unique features of the Bharhut Stupa is the detailed inscriptions in Brahmi script that label each panel, explaining what it depicts. The stupa's architecture and artwork provide valuable insights into the early development of Buddhist art and iconography in India.
Many of the sculptures and artifacts from Bharhut are now housed in the Indian Museum in Kolkata, as well as other museums around the world.
