Blackbuck National Park (Velavadar)

Blackbuck National Park, also known as Velavadar National Park, is located in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat and was established in 1976. Covering around 34 square kilometers, it is primarily a grassland ecosystem situated in the Bhal region of Saurashtra near the Gulf of Khambhat. The park is famous for its large population of blackbucks, a graceful Indian antelope with spiraling horns, with about 1800 individuals residing here.

Besides blackbucks, the park supports blue bulls (India's largest antelope), Indian grey wolves, striped hyenas, lesser floricans which are critically endangered bustards, and over 120 species of birds including harriers, eagles, falcons, and cranes. The flat, dry grasslands of the park create a unique habitat where herds of antelope move in gendered groups, and the park is known for successful conservation programs.

Velavadar offers a rich biodiversity hot spot with opportunities for wildlife sightings, safaris, and birdwatching, making it an important natural heritage area for Gujarat and India. The park is easily accessible from Bhavnagar city and promotes eco-tourism with guided tours to help visitors engage with the ecosystem responsibly.
