Cabo de Rama
Cabo de Rama Fort in South Goa is an ancient hillfort located in the Canacona region, with a rich history predating Portuguese rule. Named after Lord Rama from the Hindu epic Ramayana, it is said that Rama and his wife Sita took refuge here during their exile. The fort was originally built and ruled by the local Soonda rulers, who used it as a stronghold.
It changed hands multiple times between Hindu, Muslim, and later Portuguese rulers, with the Portuguese capturing it in 1763 and adding military structures, including barracks, a chapel (St. Anthony's Church), and cannons. The fort overlooks the Arabian Sea, offering panoramic views of nearby beaches and the coastline.
After losing military importance, it was turned into a prison until 1955. Today, the fort stands mostly in ruins but remains a popular historical site known for its scenic views, ancient walls, cannons, and the still-active chapel inside.
