The park centers on Pavagadh Hill, an 800-meter-high volcanic formation that hosts the Kalika Mata Temple, a significant Hindu shrine attracting many pilgrims. The site encompasses remains dating from prehistoric times to the 16th century, including forts, palaces, mosques, temples, residential areas, water systems, and agricultural installations.
The city of Champaner at the hill’s base was the capital of Gujarat during the 15th and early 16th centuries under Sultan Mehmud Begda. The park uniquely preserves early Islamic architecture alongside Hindu and Jain monuments, reflecting a blend of cultures and serving as India’s only complete, unaltered pre-Mughal Islamic city. It showcases a vibrant historical narrative through its fortifications and religious structures.
