Changabang
Changabang Peak is a prominent mountain in the Garhwal Himalayas, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It stands at an elevation of 6,864 meters (22,520 feet) and is part of the northeast wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
Despite not being the tallest peak in the area, Changabang is renowned for its steep and rocky profile, making it one of the most challenging climbs in the Himalayas. The first successful ascent of Changabang was made on June 4, 1974, by an expedition led by Lt. Col Balwant Sandhu and Chris Bonington. The Southeast Face/East Ridge route is considered the easiest, primarily involving a snow and ice climb.
Other notable routes include the Southwest Ridge, Direct South Face, and the North Face, each presenting its own set of challenges. Changabang is often referred to as the "Shining Mountain" due to its milky white snow-covered peak.
The trek to Changabang starts from Joshimath and passes through beautiful villages, colorful meadows, and chilled valleys, offering trekkers an unforgettable mountaineering experience.
