Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train, is a narrow-gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, this 88-kilometer-long railway climbs from about 100 meters above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to 2,200 meters at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and three loops to gain altitude.
The highest station on the line is Ghum, situated at an altitude of 2,258 meters.
The railway is famous for its scenic journey through the hills, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding tea gardens, forests, and mountains. It operates both diesel locomotives for regular service and steam-hauled trains for tourists, including the popular Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
