Delhi Gate in Arcot, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, is a historic monument that served as an entrance to Arcot Fort, built by the Mughal governor Daud Khan Panni in the early 18th century. The fort and gate played a key role during the Carnatic Wars, notably during the 1751 siege when a small British force led by Robert Clive successfully defended Arcot against much larger armies.
The gate was renamed "Delhi Gate" by Clive to mark his victory, which was seen as the starting point of British expansion towards Delhi. Though the fort was largely destroyed by Tipu Sultan in 1783, the Delhi Gate remains intact along with the room where Clive stayed.
The monument symbolizes an important turning point in Indian colonial history and the foundation of British power in the region.
