Dhankar Monastery, also known as Dhangkar Gompa, is a historic and significant Buddhist monastery located in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Perched at an elevation of 12,774 feet (3,894 meters) on a cliff, the monastery offers a panoramic view of the surrounding Spiti Valley. The monastery was built around 1,000 years ago and has been a center of Buddhist art and culture for centuries.
The monastery is associated with the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism and has undergone several renovations over the years. It houses a statue of Vairocana (Dhayan Buddha), which consists of four figures seated back-to-back, and a small museum that contains ancient scriptures and murals.
Below the monastery lies the village of Shichilling, which hosts a newer monastery that accommodates around 150 monks.
Dhankar Monastery was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom during the 17th century and has some architectural features dating back to the 12th century. The monastery is also known as Lha-od Gompa, named after a renowned lama born in 1211 who is believed to have renovated the monastery.
