Elapeedika
Hill Station
Elapeedika
Elapeedika is a small hill station located in Kannur district of Kerala, nestled in the Western Ghats at around 1000 feet above sea level. The name comes from "Elam," meaning cardamom, and "Peedika," meaning shop, reflecting its history as a trading spot for cardamom brought from Wayanad. It is a serene and lush green area with a landscape of hills and grasslands, once home to the Kurichiyar tribal community.
The region has historical significance as it was part of the battlegrounds in the resistance led by the legendary freedom fighter Pazhassi Raja against the British, with nearby remains of the Thalakkal Kotta fort. Today, Elapeedika is an agricultural village with around 300 farmer families cultivating crops like cashew, pepper, ginger, and cinnamon.
It offers peaceful natural beauty, trekking opportunities, and is close to other attractions like Kannavam Forest and Kottiyoor Shiva Temple. The village also features the highest Roman Catholic church in Kannur district, dedicated to St. Sebastian, and provides panoramic views of the district and Arabian Sea.
