Fort Emmanuel, also known as Fort Manuel, is a historic fort located at Fort Kochi Beach in Kochi, Kerala. Built in 1503 by the Portuguese under the leadership of Afonso de Albuquerque, it was the first Portuguese fort in Asia. The fort was named in honor of Manuel I of Portugal and played a crucial role in reinforcing the Portuguese occupation of the area.
This bastion of the Portuguese was built with walls made of double rows of coconut tree stems securely fastened together, with earth rammed firmly between. Over time, the fort grew significantly with further fortifications added in 1538. The Dutch captured the fort in 1663, and later the British took control in 1795. By 1806, most of the fort walls and bastions were demolished by the Dutch and the British.
Today, only remnants of Fort Emmanuel exist, particularly along the Fort Kochi beach, where visitors can see portions of the old walls and fortifications. It stands as a testament to Kochi's historical significance and its long-standing connection with colonial powers.
