Fort São Bartolomeu
Fort São Bartolomeu, also known as Fortaleza de São Bartolomeu de Chorão, is a historic military fort situated on the northeastern part of Chorão Island in North Goa, Goa. The original fort was likely built during the period of Muslim rule by the Bahmani or Bijapur Sultanates, but it was reconstructed by the Portuguese in 1720 after they took control of the region in 1510.
The fort was strategically positioned to defend the fording point between the islands of Calvim and Penelem and was armed with 11 guns. It was abandoned and fell into ruins by 1811. Today, the fort remains an important historical site amidst the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Chorão Island, which is also known for its bird sanctuary and Portuguese-era architecture.
