Fort Thomas
Fort Thomas, also known as St. Thomas Fort or Tangasseri Fort, is a historic coastal fort located in Tangasseri, Kollam, Kerala, built by the Portuguese in 1518. It was originally established to protect Portuguese trade interests, particularly in pepper, and featured three towers and four bastions.
The fort saw multiple conflicts, being captured by the Dutch in 1658, briefly recaptured by the Portuguese, and then permanently taken by the Dutch in 1661, who used it as the capital of Dutch Malabar. In 1795, the British East India Company took possession of the fort. Today, the fort stands in ruins near the Arabian Sea, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, and is a significant historical landmark that reflects the colonial history and maritime trade legacy of the region.
