Gil Sar is a freshwater lake located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Named after the Moorhen bird, called "Gil" in Kashmiri, it is adjacent to the larger Khushal Sar lake and connected to it by a narrow strait spanned by Gil Kadal bridge. The lake also links to Nigeen Lake via the Nallah Amir Khan water channel.
Historically, Gil Sar, along with surrounding lakes like Khushal Sar and Anchar Lake, formed an interconnected wetland system that supported local livelihoods through fishing and lotus cultivation. However, the lake is now in a highly deteriorated state due to encroachment, pollution, and reduced water inflow caused by urbanization and human activities.
