Gowalkot
Gowalkot Fort in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, is a historic hill fort situated on the southern bank of the Vashishti River near Chiplun. Built initially by a local king named Chougle and later controlled by the Siddis of Janjira, the fort was conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1660, who renamed it Govindgad.
The fort changed hands several times between the Marathas, Siddis, and the Peshwas, before coming under British control in 1818. Spread over two acres, the fort is surrounded by the river on three sides and a trench on the fourth. Although much of it is in ruins, remnants like the bastions, cannons, temples dedicated to Goddess Karanjeshwari and Goddess Redjai, and a dry water pond highlight its strategic importance.
The fort offers stunning views of the Vashishti River, the valley below, and the surrounding countryside, making it a notable historical and tourist site.
