Hamirsar Lake is a 450-year-old artificial lake located in the center of Bhuj, the headquarters of Kutch district in Gujarat. Named after Rao Hamir, the founder of Bhuj, it was constructed during the reign of Rao Khengarji I to provide water for the arid region. The lake covers about 28 acres and features a garden on a central island known as Rajendra Park. Historically, sophisticated canals and tunnels brought water from three river systems to recharge Bhuj’s aquifers.
Though the lake's water system was damaged during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, restoration efforts in 2003 successfully revived it, making the water potable again. Around the lake are several important landmarks including Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Kutch Museum, and various temples, making it a popular spot for relaxation, walking, and observing migratory birds in winter.
A traditional festival celebrating the lake overflowing during monsoon involves community prayers and sweet distribution, reflecting the project's cultural significance.
