Harike Bird Sanctuary
The Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary, also known as "Hari-ke-Pattan," is a remarkable natural treasure nestled in the border of Tarn Taran Sahib district and Ferozepur district in Punjab, India.
The wetland and its central feature, Harike Lake, were created by constructing headworks across the Sutlej River in 1953. This man-made, riverine, and lacustrine wetland spans 4100 hectares and plays a vital role in maintaining hydrological balance in the catchment area.
It boasts a rich biodiversity, including a vast concentration of migratory waterfowl species, making it a recognized Ramsar site for conservation and preservation.
Harike Wetland extends into three districts: Tarn Taran Sahib, Ferozepur, and Kapurthala. Its triangular shape is bounded by the Dhussi Bund, a canal, and a major road. The wetland's apex lies in the west, near the village of Harike.
The headworks on the Sutlej River serve as the reservoir, creating Harike Lake. This purposeful project provides irrigation and drinking water through feeder canals to Punjab and Rajasthan. The grand Indira Gandhi Canal in Rajasthan is fed from this source.
The nearest town to Harike Wetland is Makhu (Ferozepur), located 10 km south of Harike. Makhu connects to Ferozpur, Faridkot, and Bhatinda via the National Highway.
