Harike Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in Tarn Taran, Punjab, is one of the largest man-made wetlands in northern India, created in 1952 by constructing a barrage at the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. Spanning around 86 square kilometers across Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Kapurthala districts, the sanctuary is a vital habitat for over 400 bird species, including many migratory waterfowl from distant regions like Siberia and the Arctic.
It is recognized as a Ramsar site since 1990, indicating its international ecological importance. Beyond birds, the sanctuary supports endangered aquatic mammals, reptiles, and fish, such as the Indus river dolphin, smooth-coated otter, and several rare freshwater turtles. The wetland is a favored destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts but faces challenges like pollution, invasive weeds, and illegal activities.
