The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is one of the premier mountaineering institutes in the world. Founded on November 4, 1954, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, it was established to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.

HMI is often referred to as the Mecca of Indian Mountaineering, offering internationally recognized training in mountaineering and adventure activities. The institute conducts various courses, including Basic and Advanced Mountaineering, Search and Rescue, and Special Expeditions.
