India Gate
India Gate in New Delhi is a 42-meter-tall sandstone archway designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1921 and 1931. It stands at the eastern end of Rajpath and serves as a war memorial to honor the approximately 74,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting in World War I and the Afghan War of 1919.
The monument bears the names of over 13,500 British and Indian soldiers and features a shallow domed bowl on top, originally intended for burning oil on ceremonial occasions. After India gained independence, the Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame, was added beneath the arch to commemorate soldiers who died in later conflicts such as the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The structure’s austere classical design, free of religious or cultural ornamentation, resembles Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone.
The surrounding lawns and fountains make India Gate a popular spot for visitors, especially in the evenings when it is illuminated.
