Indravati Dam

Indravati Dam is a gravity dam on the Indravati River, a tributary of the Godavari River, located about 90 kilometers from Bhawanipatna in the Kalahandi district of Odisha. The dam is part of the Upper Indravati Hydroelectric Project, which aims to divert water from the Indravati River into the Mahanadi River basin for power generation and irrigation.

The dam stands 45 meters tall and spans 539 meters in length. Its reservoir has a capacity of 2,300,000,000 cubic meters and covers a surface area of 110 square kilometers, with a catchment area of 2,630 square kilometers.

The hydroelectric project, with an installed capacity of 600 MW from four Francis-type turbines of 150 MW each, includes the construction of four dams, eight dykes, and two inter-linking channels to form a single reservoir.

This provides irrigation to over one lakh hectares of land and ranks as one of the largest power-producing dams in eastern India. The serene environment around the dam, combined with its engineering marvel, makes it an interesting spot for visitors interested in nature and infrastructure.
