Jagadevi Fort
Jagadevi Fort, located in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, is a historically significant structure that dates back to the Vijayanagara Empire. Situated about 15 kilometers southeast of Krishnagiri, the fort was once the capital of the Baramahal region, which comprised twelve forts.
The fort is named after Jagadevaraya, a prominent chief of Penukonda, who played a crucial role in defending Penukonda against the Bijapur army. His valor earned him the territory now known as Baramahal, and he later moved his capital from Jagadevi to Chennapatnam.
The fort is spread across two hills, with the western peak known as Devalapadi and the eastern peak called Jagadevidurgam. Despite its historical importance, much of the fortification has suffered damage over time, with local quarrying activities further impacting its structure.
The fort features inscriptions in Kannada that provide details about King Jagadevaraya and Jagadevidurgam, confirming that it was built long before the reign of Tipu Sultan. Over the centuries, the fort changed hands multiple times, eventually falling under the control of the Wodeyars of Mysore before being captured by Tipu Sultan and later seized by the British in 1792.
