Jahaz Mahal
Jahaz Mahal, located in Mehrauli, South Delhi, is a historic monument built during the Lodi dynasty (1451–1526 AD). The name "Jahaz Mahal" translates to "Ship Palace" because its reflection in the nearby Hauz-i-Shamsi reservoir made it appear like a floating ship.
The structure was likely built as a Sarai (inn) to accommodate pilgrims traveling from Afghanistan, Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, and Turkey to visit Delhi’s Muslim shrines. Another theory suggests it was a summer retreat for Mughal emperors Akbar Shah II and Bahadur Shah II.
The palace has a U-shaped courtyard, originally rectangular, with six intricately carved chhatris (domed pavilions). The central dome is decorated with blue tiles, which stand out against the red sandstone structure.
A small mosque is present within the palace, identified by a mihrab (prayer niche) on the west wall. Jahaz Mahal is the venue for the annual Phool Walon Ki Sair (Procession of Florists), a festival celebrating Hindu-Muslim unity, initiated by Emperor Akbar Shah II in 1820 and revived by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961.
