Jalakanyaka Mermaid Statue
The Jalakanyaka Mermaid Statue, often referred to as Sagarakanyaka, is a remarkable sculpture located at Shankumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Created by the renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman, this concrete statue is an imposing 87 feet long and 25 feet tall, making it one of the largest mermaid sculptures in the world.
The Jalakanyaka, which translates to "the maiden of the sea," depicts a mermaid in a reclining, sunbathing pose. The statue symbolizes the profound connection between humanity and nature, with its serene expression reflecting a blend of tranquility and melancholy. It's said that the mermaid has left the polluted sea to find solace on land, only to discover that the land is equally troubled by pollution.
Shankumugham Beach, where the statue is located, is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a picturesque backdrop of the Arabian Sea. The nearby attractions, such as the Shankumugham Devi Temple and the Indian Coffee House, add to the charm of visiting this sculpture.
