Jama Masjid in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, is a magnificent 15th-century mosque built by Hussain Shah Sharqi of the Jaunpur Sultanate. It is one of the largest mosques in India and a key tourist attraction in Jaunpur.
The mosque is located in Shanti Nagar, Olandganj, Jaunpur, and is 2.2 km north-northeast of Jaunpur city. The mosque's foundation was laid in 1438 by Ibrahim Shah, but construction above ground level began in 1440 after his death. It was completed in 1473 by Hussain Shah, the final Sharqi monarch.
The mosque features Egyptian-style engravings, lotus and sunflower motifs, and intricate arches, making it an architectural marvel. Jama Masjid has a height of over 200 feet, with 27 steps leading to the top. Its southern gateway stands 20 feet above ground level, and the inner premises extend to 219 x 217 feet, with gateways at each of the four cardinal points.
The eastern gateway was destroyed by Sikandar Lodhi, but the mosque remains a testament to Sharqi-era craftsmanship.
