Jawahar Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary

Jawahar Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kota, Rajasthan, is an ecologically significant area covering around 220 square kilometers. It is part of the largest viable forest tract amid Rajasthan’s fragmented forest belt and is managed under the wildlife division of Kota.

The sanctuary features dense dry deciduous forests with important tree species like Haldu, Mahua, Amala, and Khirni. It supports a rich variety of wildlife, including sloth bears, panthers, leopards, sambars, chinkaras, and various bird species.

The sanctuary is notable for several gorges along the Chambal River that provide ideal habitats for crocodiles and gharials, with sandy riverbeds serving as breeding grounds for these reptiles. Historically, it was home to a healthy population of tigers, but these have since disappeared. The proximity of the Jawahar Sagar Dam adds to the area’s ecological complexity and scenic value.

Despite challenges like biotic pressure and habitat degradation, the sanctuary remains vital for conserving Rajasthan’s natural heritage and offers potential for eco-tourism development. It is accessible from Kota city, about 50 kilometers away, making it a feasible destination for wildlife and nature enthusiasts.
